Cooking Outdoors in Denmark

Cooking Outdoors in Denmark

Jakob Gjerluff Ager is based on the West Coast of Denmark and regularly camps and cooks outdoors in the beautiful Danish Countryside. We asked him about his latest trip to Kloster Hede in Denmark and what he cooked.

Q: Where are you camping and why did you choose this location?

We were camping in Kloster Hede Plantage in Western Denmark which is the third largest forest area in Denmark. The coastal region in Denmark is often quite windy, so finding a sheltered spot is key for the best outdoor cooking experience. This particular spot offers a great camping location as it has drive-in accessibility, a good sheltered cooking area and an amazing view.

Q: What were you cooking? Is it local, did you find these yourself?  Any tips for cooking this dish yourself.

We were cooking oysters and mussels, picked just hours before at secret spot in Limfjorden.

The Limfjord is a shallow inlet of the sea in Jutland, which stretches for just over 100 miles of long, undisturbed coastline, and it has many bays and islands. it is well known for its natural landscape, which is great for outdoor activities such as hiking and biking, and for local food - especially shellfish.

We have two kinds of oysters in this area, with one being an invasive species. Eating them is both a pleasure and an environmental act!

Both oysters and mussels can be intimidating to cook, but it's actually super simple.

The key to mussels is lots of cream and white wine. Cook up some vegetables in some hot oil, add the mussels and steam them in the white wine - finally add cream for the sauce. Then you have an easy but fantastic outdoor meal - great for social hangouts. Remember not to eat the ones that don't open up during cooking.

Q: Which gear did you use from Snow Peak - and what's your favourite?

We used the Takibi Fire & Grill, which makes it easy to use pots, pans and a grill at the same time, as well as being able to control the heat with the different height levels for the grill.

For soups I absolutely love the Titanium insulated bowls. Most camping dishwear gets so hot to handle when you are eating liquids, but the insulated bowls both keep the soup warm and your hands from getting too hot.
