Coffee Cocktails

Coffee doesn't have to be only your morning wake up call. It has also been used in alcohol for decades - most commonly in an Espresso Martini.

Here, courtesy of our good friends over at Workshop Coffee, we have an alcoholic and a non-alcoholic cocktail using coffee that aren't Espresso Martinis.

Cold Brew Negroni (serves 2, prep time 18-24hrs)

Ingredients:

  • 38g Coffee (espresso roast preferable for the intensity)
  • 300ml Filtered Water
  • Sweet Vermouth
  • Aromatic Gin
  • Ice
  • Orange

Method:

  • Coarse grind your 38g coffee.
  • Add to a small plastic bottle (ideally 330ml).
  • Add 330ml filtered water.
  • Put the lid on, shake to ensure all the grounds are wet, remove the cap and gently squeeze to expel as much air as possible before resealing.
  • Leave to brew for 18-24 hours.
  • Strain through a paper filter to remove the coffee grounds (there should be around 200ml filtered coffee brewed)
  • Combine 100ml cold brew with 50ml sweet vermouth and 40ml aromatic gin in a cocktail shaker with large ice cubes.
  • Stir down until chilled.
  • Strain over fresh ice in a tumbler and garnish with a slice of orange.

This Cold Brew Negroni is a different take on a traditional negroni. The cold brew will act as your Campari element. This cocktail would be ideal for someone who isn't a fan of the bitterness of the Campari in the traditional negroni, the cold brew will still have a bitterness to it, but it will not be to the same degree.

Iced Filter Tonic (serves 4, prep time 6 minutes) - Non-Alcoholic

Ingredients:

  • 42g coffee (ideally a fruity filter roast).
  • Pourover cone with filter paper.
  • 400ml filtered water.
  • Ice
  • Tonic Water
  • Bitters
  • Lemon

Method

  • Grind the coffee medium-fine.
  • Add 300g ice to a jug under your brewer.
  • Rinse filter paper and add your coffee.
  • Boil water and pour 400ml slowly over the 42g of coffee.
  • Once all the coffee has dripped through over the ice, stir it down to ensure it is all melted and has diluted the filter coffee to the right strength.
  • Add 150ml of the coffee to a highball glass with ice.
  • Top with 150ml of quality tonic water with several dashes of bitters.
  • Finish with a twist of lemon.

This mocktail is perfect for when you're craving something sweet in the afternoon!

These two drinks are great alternatives to the ever-popular espresso martini. An easy way to elevate your Takibi time!
